ptoms oftyphoid fever are headache, nausea, pain in the back, legs, andabdomen, loss of appetite, sometimes bleeding from the nose,constipation followed by diarrhea, coated tongue, and a charac-teristic rash which appears generally upon the abdomen. Laterin the disease the physicians examination will reveal an enlargedspleen and the germ in the blood. The stools become liquid andof the color of pea soup. The temperature rises steadily, reaching103° or 104° at about the end of the first week, remains at thispoint for three weeks, and then begins to decline. In some casesthe fever ends in two weeks, and in others it continues to the fifthor sixth week; but in a normal case of typhoid the temperatureshould begin to go down by the fourth week, a little lower eachday, until the normal point is reached. The pulse is slow in pro-portion to the fever, not becoming rapid until a later stage of thedisease or until the patient has become weak, sometimes reaching Typhoid Fever and Pneumonia 167

Typhoid patients are liable to sudden changes and relapseswhich make it extremely necessary for the nurse, even if she is incharge for only an hour, to be thoroughly informed regarding thenature and course of the disease. A nurse usually instructs themember of the family who relieves her, as far as she can, but inthe stress and hurry of illness it is not easy to give comprehensiveinstructions even if one has a talent for teaching. The amateurassistant should get all the information she can beforehand fromthe physician and the nurse, and if there is any doubt about re-membering the various points she should keep a notebook.
