English: Some possible causes of pencil-shaped RBCs include: Thalassemia- Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the production of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. Some forms of thalassemia can lead to the development of pencil-shaped RBCs.
Iron-deficiency anemia- Severe iron-deficiency anemia, if left untreated for an extended period, can result in various changes in RBC morphology, including pencil-shaped cells. Other Hemoglobinopathies- Certain inherited hemoglobinopathies, besides thalassemia, may also lead to abnormal RBC shapes, including pencil cells. Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)- MDS is a group of bone marrow disorders where the production of blood cells is disrupted, potentially leading to various abnormalities in blood cell morphology. |
