DescriptionPeggy Orenstein on Boys and Sex.jpg |
English: Peggy Orenstein: Boys and Sex
I first became aware of Peggy Orenstein in 2012 when I taped her talk about her book "Cinderella Ate My Daughter". This was a big hit on Free Speech TV. They played it repeatedly. It also hit the spot with me as I was raising a young daughter at the time. As anyone who has raised daughters can’t help but know, Cinderella is going to eat your daughter and there’s nothing you can do about it. Your little “princess” is going to get that Barbie house and all the furnishings or suffer social ostracism. Who would allow that? See: Peggy Orenstein: A New Generation of Girlie-Girls: https://archive.org/details/scm-24670... Continuing on in her investigation of the role of the ubiquitous marketing machine in shaping our daughters’ identities and futures, her next best-seller, Girls & Sex broke ground, shattered taboos, and launched conversations about young women’s right to pleasure and agency in sexual encounters. As she explains, this prompted calls from her audience- “What about the boys?” And so be it. Orenstein gave this talk at Town Hall Seattle with insight from her latest book, Boys & Sex to examine how young men understand and negotiate the new rules of physical and emotional intimacy. She outlines how boys are subject to the same cultural forces as girls—steeped in the same distorted media images and binary stereotypes of female sexiness and toxic masculinity—which equally affect how they navigate sexual and emotional relationships. Drawing on comprehensive interviews with young men, psychologists, academics, and experts in the field, she dissects so-called locker room talk; how the word “hilarious” robs boys of empathy; pornography as the new sex education; boys’ understanding of hookup culture and consent; and their experience as both victims and perpetrators of sexual violence. By surfacing young men’s experience in all its complexity, Orenstein unravels the hidden truths, hard lessons, and important realities of young male sexuality in today’s world.
