Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pawnbroker's sign, Belfast. The traditional sign, of the three gold balls, outside C&J Geddis Ltd on the Albertbridge Road. Pawnshops were once a feature of inner Belfast but have now become a rarity - the Cash Converters franchise seems to fill the void.

One theory about the origin of the sign can be found in 1352872. Another is that they originated with St Nicolas who is sometimes portrayed as carrying three golden balls symbolising the three purses of gold that he is said to have given, secretly, to rescue three girls from prostitution. This story has some weight in that he is the patron saint of pawnbrokers.

If you have any other theories feel free to make a posting in the "Discussion" box.
