Description
English: The famous Patton (M 47) Tank had been US Army's principal medium tank during the early Cold War era. The tank was named after General George S Patton Jr, Commander in Chief of the Third Army during World War II. Its main gun was the M 36 90 mm gun while the secondary armament consisted of two .30 Cal Browning Machine Guns and a .50 Cal Browning M2. During the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, this tank saw fierce action in one of the largest tank battles at Aral Uttar where as many as 100 Patton tanks were destroyed or captured by the Indian Army. This battle also witnessed the outstanding act of gallantry by Havildar Abdul Hamill, who was decorated with the Parana Vir Chakra. India's highest gallantry award, for knocking out seven enemy tanks with a Recoilless gun. Patton tank were also used extensively by Pakistan Army in Kutch Sector during 1971 Indo-Pak war.
