Summary[edit]
DescriptionPatriot Heights Apartments - former Humboldt District Branch YMCA - Buffalo, New York - 20220414.jpg |
English: The former Humboldt District Branch of the Young Men's Christian Association at 347 East Ferry Street in Buffalo, New York, as seen on an April 2022 afternoon. This is a good example of the understatedly handsome "Stripped Classical" style of architecture commonly employed in the early 20th century for this type of government and institutional buildings. As per usual, the bulk of the stylistic ornamentation is clustered around the entrance, which here projects from the main façade in roughly a half-width vestibule. The two doorsways are flanked with Doric pilaster strips and crowned by scroll modillions that support the projecting cornice underneath the brick parapet, which itself is decorated with swag reliefs. Elsewhere it's a much more austere affair, though you'll find decorative dentil rows adorning several of the second-story windows as well as another cornice at the roofline. The Humboldt District YMCA was dedicated on November 27, 1928 as a replacement for an earlier facility on a site across the street from the present-day Catholic Health Building, and was one of the earliest African-American YMCA branches in Western New York. It served in its original function until 2007. It's now the home of the Patriot Heights Apartments, a complex of sixteen subsidized units managed by Saving Grace Ministries and offered to low-income military veterans. |
