Papal seal
Photographer

Title
Papal seal
Description
English: Half of a lead seal from a Papal bulla. One side has the Popes name and title C[LE]ME[NS] PP[...] within a pelleted border the reverse has the bearded face of St Paul in a pelleted border with PE above it. There is damage to the saint's face. The disc shaped seal has had parts of the edge pared off. The seal may have been cut in half carefully across a previously drilled, central hole rather than broken. Also the cut respects the head of St Paul underlining the pare with which it was cut. Because the missing half of the seal held the number designating which Pope Clement, it is not possible to date the object closely. The first Clement dates from 76AD and Clement XIV died in 1774 giving a wide range of possiblities!
