"İstanbul'un panoramik görüntüsüne Melling'in vurduğu damga, en az mimari alanda gösterdiği başarı kadar önemlidir. 1819'da yayımlanan 'Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore' başlıklı kitabındaki İstanbul panoraması bunun kanıtıdır. Sarayburnu'ndan Tophane-i Âmire'nin sonuna kadar uzanan bölgeyi resmeden Melling, özellikle 18. yüzyıl yapılaşmasını titizlikle yansıtmıştır. Topkapı Sarayı'nın sahil şeridinde yoğunlaşan bu yapılaşmadan bugüne çok az eser kalmıştır." Ekrem Işın
