Summary[edit]
DescriptionPannonian Region Geological Evolution.gif |
English: At the boundary between the Eocene and Miocene (35-30 Ma) there was a large drop in eustatic sea level and a sudden cooling of the climate. The Pannonian Sea began to grow isolated from the rest of the Paratethys Sea. This was the peak of the Alpine Orogeny, bringing up mountain ranges across the region.
Extension was rapid and halted by the Oligocene-Miocene boundary (23 Ma.) This period marked complete subduction of all lithosphere, and ultimate delamination of all subducting plates. Middle Miocene (10 Ma) saw a stabilization of climate, but rapid trench rollback The Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.96-5.33 Ma) saw the desiccation of the entire Mediterranean region. Large sequences of evaporites were deposited as the Pannonian Sea began to dry up. By this time, extension had completely halted. The complete disappearance of the Pannonian Sea took place by the Pliocene. Map data taken from Jolivet et al. |
