s a place which is practically anisland and the very name of which signifies manyfishes. Yet at the time I was there the varietyexposed for sale was not great. The corbina, ap-parently about as staple and certain a crop as ournorthern cod, the red snapper, mullet and a flatfish resembling our fresh water sunfish, were allthat were exhibited. There were a few West Indianlobsters too, about as large as our average sizedlobsters, but without claws, having antennae, per-haps 18 inches long, instead. Shrimps and smallmolluscs were plentifully displayed. As to meatsthe market was neither varied nor pleasing. If theassiduous attentions of flies produce any effect onraw meats prejudicial to human health, the Panamamarket offers rich field for some extension of thesanitary powers of Col. Gorgas. In one notable respect this Panama market differsfrom most open air affairs of the sort. The vendorsmake no personal effort to sell their goods. The effectof the blue water and sky closing the end of the narrow street of parti-colored houses is picturesque. THE PREVALENT TEMPER OF THE PANAMANIANS 233 no ballyhoo, to employ the language of ConeyIsland. What chatter there is is chiefly among thebuyers; the sellers sit silent by their wares and aremore apt to receive a prospective customer sulkilythan with alert eagerness. Indeed the prevalentcondition of the Panamanian, so far as observableon the streets, seems to be a chronic case of sulks.Doubtless amongst his own kind he can be a merrydog, but in the presence of the despised gringohis demeanor is one of apathy, or contemptuousindifference.
