Within a shorttime Ymuiden became one of the leading fishing ports in Europe. PANAMA CANAL TRAFFIC AND TOLLS. 135 The total amount spent on the improvement of the canal, exclusive of the fisheries harbor, during theperiod from 1883, when it became a State canal, to 1907, when the main improvements had been completed,was 18,306,411 florins ($7,359,177.22), distributed among the several works according to figures presented inTable II. The total cost of construction and improvement of the canal from its beginning to 1907 was 58,186,411florins (.123,390,937.22). The small amounts spent upon the canal each year since 1907 are also stated inTable II.
