Description

The container ship APL Jade is leaving the third lock and entering Gatun Lake. Nord Explorer was probably entering the second lock, in the foreground, though it is not in the photo.

The lock chambers are 110 ft (33.5 m) wide by 1,050 ft (320) long, with a usable length of 1,000 ft (305 m). These dimensions determine the maximum size of ships which can use the canal. This size is known as Panamax. The total lift in the three steps of the Gatun locks is 85 ft (26 m), about 28 ft (9 m) in each lock.

APL Jade is 288 m (945 ft) long and 32 m (105 ft) wide. The width is the maximum that the Panama Canal can accommodate. The ship was headed for Oakland, California. It is operated by APL, formerly American President Lines, which had been an American shipper. APL is now owned (through subsidiaries) by the government of Singapore.
