Summary[edit]

Description

Seen at Udvar-Hazy Center, the annex of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, located on the grounds of Dulles Airport.

The Boeing 307 Stratoliner was the first pressurized airliner, first flying in 1938. It carried 33 passengers in comfort at 20,000 feet altitude, with the cabin altitude at 8,000 feet which is also used by today's airliners; by flying high, it could avoid most bad weather. Aside from the fuselage, the aircraft is identical to the B-17 bomber otherwise.

Boeing built ten 307s in total - one prototype which was lost in an accident, five for TWA, three for Pan Am, and one for the personal use of Howard Hughes. This example, the last survivor, was restored by Boeing in 2001 - and is still flyable, even after a Puget Sound ditching in 2002.
