Summary[edit]

Description
English: Palm Avenue, Bonginda, Congo, ca. 1900-1915.
  • Black and white lantern slide displaying a view of Palm Avenue, a palm allée (avenue) leading up to the Congo-Balolo Mission chapel at Bonginda, in Belgian colonial Congo Free State or post-1908 Belgian Congo (present day Democratic Republic of the Congo).
  • Bonginda was the first village to be visited and opened up for mission work. A dog can be seen on the pathway, along with four Congolese male figures.
  • The slide is captioned with "Palm Avenue - Bgda. leads up to Chapel."
  • This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo-Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
