Description

I am overlooking a cliff at Pali Lookout, on HI-61, Pali Highway.

This cliff is where the decisive battle between the forces of Kamehameha the Great and the Maui Tribe was held. Kamehameha had first arrived on Waikiki in 1795, at a time when Oahu was ruled by the Maui Tribe and its chief Kalanikupule. Although the two sides were evenly matched, Kamehameha possessed cannons which gave him a decisive edge. Over four hundred Maui soldiers were pushed up here, then over the cliff to their deaths hundreds of feet below. Kamehameha, with the victory here, took control of Oahu, and signed a treaty with the Kauai, making him Hawaii's first unified ruler.

In the far distance is Kaneohe Bay, and its United States Marine Corps Base. President Barack Obama, a native of Honolulu, had been vacationing there for the past several days. Kaneohe is linked to Honolulu via HI-61 (Pali Highway) and HI-63 (Likelike Highway), and to Pearl Harbor via Interstate H-3.
