-•Ej.p3Hiresi3g: HAURAN. 19. Route. 155 xample of a Crusaders castle. Tlie upper stories are in ruins, but the.pproaches to tliem are still in good preservation. A staircase descendsnto a subterranean cbapel, where traces of frescoes are still visible. Inhe interior of the fortress are numerous cisterns. Although the springs,re situated immediately outside the town, large cisterns have been con-tructed within the town (particularly by the tower of Beybars). — Thelew from the top of the castle embraces the Dead Sea and the surround-ng mountains. In the distance the Mt. of Olives, and even the Russianmildings beyond it, are visible. A survey of the valley of Jordan as fars the heights of Jericho is also obtained. The town is surrounded by a wall with five towers, but the N.nd E. sides of this have largely disappeared. The well-preserved towert the N.W. corner, called BurJ ez-Zdhir, bears an inscription and figuresf lions of the kind common in Arabian monuments of the Crusaderseriod.
