This loss figureof 8 per cent, however,was dependent upon ourcompanys engineers beingable to maintain the powerfactor of the lines some-where near unity. Thisinstallation at V a c a-Dixon of two 20,000 K.V. A, synchronous con-densers. Now, a synchron-ous condenser is merely acertain type of electric motor which may beadjusted so as to cause it to take current ateither a lagging or leading power factorfrom the line. Thus, the synchronous con-densers at Vaca-Dixon substation may be soadjusted that the power factor of the Pittransmission lines may be held close to unityeven though the power factor of the load ismuch less than unitv.
