Text Appearing Before Image:
escapethrough the reaction nozzles at oppositesides of the shaft, as suggested in Fig. 2.From 130 B. C. until A. D. 1629, ornearly 1700 years, the subject of steampower lay dormant, but in 1629 GiovanniBranca, an architect of Lorreto, Italy, made a steam engine by impinging a jetof steam against blades or vanes of awheel similar to those of a water wheel,as shown in Fig. 3. Both Heros and Brancas engines werenot much more than toys, yet it is worthyof note that the principles employed ineither are the principles employed in ourlargest steam turbines of today. To Edward Somerset, second Marquisof Worcester, appears to be due the creditof making the first useful steam engine. Its purpose was to raise water, having apair of displacement chambers from eachof which alternately water was forced bysteam from an independent boiler, or,perhaps, by applying heat to the chamberitself while the other vessel was allowedto refill. Lord Worcesters description ofthe engine in his Century of Inventions
Text Appearing After Image:
(1663) is obscure and the drawings areextinct. It is not clear whether thesuction of a vacuum was used for raisingthe water as well as the direct pressure ofsteam. An engine of two horsepower was inuse at Vauxhall in 1656, and the wells atRaglan Castle contain traces of another, but neither Worcesters efforts nor those 100 Pacific Service Magazine
