InKentucky the farmer grows a small acre-age of hemp and does the breaking by hand when he has not much else to do,but before the war many farmers in Ken-tucky had abandoned hemp for tobacco. The Rindge Company also operates afactory at Middle River which makesstarch and potato flour from cull pota-toes, which formerly were left to rot onthe ground. This not only utilizes a wasteproduct, but it removes these small pota-toes from the ground. If left on theground they are a detriment to any suc-ceeding crops. The same company has about 4000acres planted to Indian corn or maize.It was formerly thought that corn couldnot be grown here to advantage, but thecorn grown on these lands is pronouncedby millers and other experts of betterquality than Eastern corn, and the yieldsare much heavier than in the corn beltof the Middle States.
