I built the first roadacross the upper divi-sion to connect with thecable ferry on the SanJoaquin River just belowwhat is now the Streckerranch. I also helped tobuild the first school inabout 1880 and was oneof its trustees, while mydaughter was one of thestar pupils. Looking from point on Disappointment Slough northwest acrossEmpire tract. Chas. R. Harry and Dr. Fred Baird alsowere early instructors in the school. I retained possession of my land until1908, although I had not lived on it since1895. The place is now owned by Mrs.J. W. T. Muhs, who lives on the land. Under the personal guidance of Mr. J.H, Fagg, our companys power superin-tendent in the San Joaquin District, thewriter recently had the pleasure of travel-ing over a considerable portion of thisisland territory. Our means of locomo-tion was a fast launch, one of the Pa-cific Service fleet, and for one wholelong day we darted in and about theislands, now upon the broad waters ofthe river, now through some narrowslough, until, when nightfall compelledour return to Stockton, we felt we hadobtained a fairly comprehensive idea ofthe agricultural situation in the Deltacountry.
