It wasdecided, inas-much as the 1918crop of fruit pitswould not beavailable before some time in the month of August, tobuild one large scale unit at the Inde-pendent plant and to operate that uniton what supplies could be obtained in theState from the residue of the 1917 crop.In this way defects in design would beeliminated before the total of six unitswas constructed. Early in July this first imit was placedin commission, and after a few weeksoperation it became apparent that somechanges would be necessary. Conse-quently, the old design was abandoned,a new one substituted and constructionwork was immediately commenced on theremaining five units. It was almost thefirst of August before the plant was reallyon a steady operating basis. From ap-proximately August 1st till December 4th,when by order of Colonel Bradley Deweyoperation was discontinued, the plant wasin continuous operation.
