ly todevelop. The rubber is subject to attackby the gas, as a feather edge of the gasketis exposed to the gas. This will slowly de-compose the rubber, which, particularlyif there is any movement of the pipe, eventually blows out. When lead wire issubstituted for rubber, joints can be mademore satisfactory and permanent. The only successful type of joint forhigh pressure is no joint at all. That is,welding by oxy-acetylene the butt ends ofthe wrought-iron pipe. This idea was de-veloped by Mr. L. B. Jones of this com- 72 Pacific Service Magazine pany a little over five years ago; today itis exclusively used and has proved itselfso satisfactory that no substitute is evengiven a thought. The pipe for welding is purchased withchamfered ends, and so when butted to-gether a V is formed. The welder workson top of the ground alongside of thetrench. With the oxy-acetylene torch anda stick of wrought iron he proceeds toheat the pipe ends and melt the stick ofiron which builds up on the pipe ends.

He goes completely around the pipe; usually the pipe is turned as it is more convenient to make the joint on top. But when necessary, the welder works the joint upside-down. Practice in this work only makes perfect. The things to avoid are learned by observing cause and effect and very soon the welder becomes perfect and joints are made as strong as the pipe itself. The entire system of gas distributionat the recent Panama-Pacific Expositionin San Francisco w^as through pipes withwelded joints. The gas supph to the Red-wood District is through an 8-inch high-pressure line thirty miles long, everyjoint of which was welded. BetweenSanta Rosa and Petaluma there is overtwelve miles of welded pipe. In Fresno,Sacramento, San Rafael, Oakland and SanFrancisco every bit of high-pressure laidin recent vears has been welded.
