Summary[edit]

Description
English: Liebig Chromos. Trade card. Series 1320, Lhassa, Holy city of the Himalayas, Lhasa, the holy town of the Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism), no 6, Lhasa people. Private collection Paul MR Maeyaert. 7,1 x 11cm. ; Ref: PM_110560_Liebig_Chromos; www.pmrmaeyaert.eu; www.polmayer.com; Cultural heritage; Cultural heritage|Techniques|Postcard trade card. Text on reverse translated from Dutch to English: LHASA, HOLY TOWN OF THE LAMAISM; 6. Residents of Lhasa .; Tibet is the highest country in the world, continually bombarded by cold, violent winds. It lies between Mongolia, China and India and is more or less dependent on the Chinese empire. Its inhabitants, nearly 3 million, belong to the Mongolian race. In our picture some types of different social classes are depicted, painstakingly dressed and with eccentric headpieces. Some of them have to be very surprising: to greet each other they stuck out the tongue and scratch themselves behind the ear; their bodies cut them to pieces with the pigs! to feed; when robbers rob someone, they will only pass to it after they have offered the victim their apology; many houses are covered with ram and ox horns; some cups for their worship are made of human skulls; the older and the more rancid the butter is, the better she is called. The Festival of the Butter is also the main party, celebrated together with that of New Year which lasts for 15 days. Long beforehand thousands of lotus flowers (sacred flower of Buddhism) and Buddha beds are made from rancid butter, and in the evening countless rows of butter lamps illuminate the sanctuaries.
Nederlands: LHASA, HEILIGE STAD VAN HET LAMAÏSME; 6. Bewoners van Lhasa.; Tibet is het hoogst gelegen land van de wereld, aanhoudend bestookt door koude, hevige winden. Het ligt tusschen Mongolië, China en Indi* en is min of meer van het Chineesche rijk afhankelijk. Zijn bewoners, nagenoeg 3 miljoen, behooren tot het Mongoolsch ras. Op ons plaatje zijn eenige typen afgebeeld van verschillende maatschappelijke klassen, schilderachtig gekleed en met zonderlinge hoofddeksels. Sommige hunner zeden moeten ons wel zeer verbazingwekkend voorkomen: om elkaar te groeten steken ze de tong uit en krabben zij zich achter het oor; hun lijken snijden ze aan stukken om er de varkens met! te voederen; wanneer roovers iemand overvallen, dan gaan ze daar slechts toe over nadat zij het slachtoffer hun verontschuldiging hebben aangeboden; vele huizen zijn overdekt met rams- en ossenhorens; sommige bekers voor hun eeredienst zijn gemaakt van menschenschedels; hoe ouder en hoe ranziger de boter is, hoe lekkerder heet ze. Ook is het Feest van de Boter het voornaamste feest, gezamenlijk gevierd met dat van Nieuwjaar hetwelk 15 dagen duurt. Langen tijd op voorhand worden duizenden lotusbloemen (heilige bloem van het Boeddhisme) en Boeddhabedden uit ranzige boter vervaardigd, en 's avonds verlichten ontelbare rijen boterlampen de heiligdommen.;
