Title
PILGRIM BADGE
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy pilgrim badge of medieval period, probably dating between the 13th and the first half of the 14th century AD. The badge is composed by a plate depicting a man equipped for a holy travel. The man has a full beard and wears a clock, the hood of which is pulled over his head. He holds something in th right hand but the plate is old broken and only a pellet survive, possibly part of a rosary.

This pilgrim badge is linked with the worship of St. Jos, son of the 7th century king of Brittany, who gave up is position to go on pilgrimage to Rome and decided to live as an hermit in a monastery in France, near Étaples, named after him Saint-Josse-sur-Mer.

The back part is undecorated with a central rib which is a trace of the casting technique. The lowe half of the object is missing. The pilgrim badge measures 52.17mm in length, 25.64mm in width, 1.12mm in thick and weights 7.03g.

Spencer, B. (1998) illustrate similar pilgrim badges (p. 217, no. 234), noting that another identical one have been found in Salisbury area and is described in the Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue (Spencer 1990), p. 54, no.120.
