Summary[edit]
DescriptionPIA11179 - Hard Knocks in Tyrrhena Terra.jpg |
English: This enhanced-color image shows a small portion of a dark crater floor in the Tyrrhena Terra region of Mars. This is largely ancient hard bedrock that has been cratered by numerous impacts over the eons.
Two other interesting geological features in Tyrrhena Terra (not pictured here): Herschel Crater and Tyrrhena Patera, one of the oldest volcanoes on Mars. The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates HiRISE, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. |

Editors' note: Although the title and caption describes this photograph as a scene in Tyrrhena Terra, it was actually taken above Terra Cimmeria, according to metadata provided on the photograph's original HiRISE catalog page (ESP_021716_1685), and boundaries of regions on Mars as defined by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and International Astronomical Union (IAU) at the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. |
