Summary[edit]
DescriptionPB30 Type E Post Box Flaxton Road Raymere Gardens Woolwich London SE18 2LA Detail 2.jpg |
English: This post box at the junction of Flaxton Road and Raymere Gardens in Woolwich, London SE18 is the only surviving example of the PB30 type 'E' pillar in use in London. The PB30 is the smaller of two similar experimental oval designs featuring an integrated stamp vending machine at one end. The larger PB29 'type D' boxes were intended for use in cities and sizeable towns so it is unsurprising that, of the approx. fifteen survivors (of 75 made by Derby Castings in 1932), ten are to be found in London.
Only 50 of these smaller PB30 'type 'E' boxes were made - also by Derby Castings in 1932 - of which only five are believed to remain, one of which is in the Post Office Museum collection. This image depicts the key identifying feature of the smaller type - on the more common PB29 the words 'Post Office' are on a single line below the insignia, whereas on the PB30 the words are separated. |
