Summary[edit]

Description FORT NORFOLK, Va. -- A mesh bag full of 1,000 oyster spat, or baby oysters, is zip-tied shut to keep predators out as they grow Oct 2, 2011. The mesh bags are then put in oyster floats, which hold oysters about one foot under the surface of the water and keep oysters from being buried by sediment or scavenged by predators while they grow. Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with a local elementary to build floats and house oyster spat along the shores of the district’s property on the Elizabeth River – the floats are the first step to building a sanctuary oyster reef.
