In taking Paul-hans altitude three triangles had to besolved, one of them a scalene, the othertwo right triangles. The use of thesecond transit instrument was necessarybecause of the moving object being offthe base line. As the aviator swam nearer into viewon his downward flight the excitementof the onlookers increased. Womengave vent to hysterical laughs thatchanged into sobs and in the eyes of manymen were tears of excitement. It wasa relief when the band dashed into theMarseillaise, in which thousands ofvoices blended. Five minutes lat
