Summary[edit]
DescriptionOutcrop behind Scourie - geograph.org.uk - 1146557.jpg |
English: Outcrop behind Scourie. The outcrop is part of a larger banded mafic-ultramafic unit that now dips very steeply (to the northwest I think). The weathering has caused the rocks to develop a brown to dark grey outer shell and has etched out the banding and jointing to give the beautiful 'tracked' pattern. These bodies are interpreted as some of the oldest parts of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex probably formed in magma chambers at some depth in the earth's crust. The peridotites, pyroxenites and gabbros now seen were probably formed some 2900 to 3000 million years ago.The banding normally reflects gravitationally controlled settling of the crystallizing minerals in the basic magma with the layers reflecting new pulses of magma. However, in some instances the banding can reflect the orientation of the enclosing walls or even roof of the magma chamber. These rocks are some of the oldest rocks found in Britain. Thanks to Dr J R Mendum for this information.
