Bowery Theatre, 1859 OUR THEATRES TO-DAY AND YESTERDAY. 49 Broadway, was opened October 16, 1871. In 1871 it was known as Newcombs Hall, and later became the St. James1871 Theatre. Vaudeville was the chief attraction, though it was here that Steele Mackaye made his debut as anactor in 1872. The building was demolished in 1873, when theGilsey estate erected a more modern theatre on the property. The Union Square Theatre, on the south side of Union Square, between Broadway and Fourth avenue, was erected in 1871 on a site formerly occupied by a hotel. The house, equipped1871 with all the modern improvements of the day, was opened under the management of Robert W. Butler,September 11 of this year (1871). The names of Harrigan andHart, John Mulligan, Mrs. E. L. Davenport, James ONeill, KateGirard, stand out prominently in the making of its history. Itwas here that Chauncey Olcott made his debut in romantic opera. In 1893 the theatre was taken over by B. F. Keith, who for fiveyears managed it
