Even to this day in parts of France you can hear some strangethings about the kingfisher. Many people believe that if youwill take a dead kingfisher and suspend it by the bill, that thebreast will always point to the north. Other folks say that ifyou will take a kingfisher and tie a string around its body andsuspend it from the ceiling, that the bill will point the directionfrom which the wind is blowing, even though no wind strikesthe bird. Still other superstitious people believe that if onewill tie a piece of the breast of a kingfisher about his neck hewill not drown, and there are those who carry the feathersof a kingfisher in their pockets to insure them luck.
