| Description | Photo of a Tesla coil (then called an Oudin coil), built at Los Angeles Polytechnic High School around 1900. 48 inches (121 cm) high including top electrode. The outer primary coil has 15 turns and the secondary coil has 800-1000 turns. The primary was powered with a 10,000 volt 1kW transformer, capacitor, and spark gap. It produced streamers up to 2 feet long. The corona discharge at the top of the coil looks as if it was painted onto the photo later. Alterations to image: removed caption, which read: "Oudin resonator, showing spray discharge around upper edge and around ball terminal." |
