oude Beurs een oppervlak van 2150 M2., met een openbinnenplein de helft daarvan beslaande, van de nieuwe Beurs groot2833 M2., besloeg het binnenplein, dat reeds spoedig met een glazen lan-taarn werd afgedekt, ± lJ4 van dat oppervlak. In klassieken stijl gebouwd,meer deftig dan vriendelijk van aanzien, had die nieuwe Beurs slechtseen korten levensduur, want na 50 jarigen dienst te klein geworden,werd zij ten doode veroordeeld, en opnieuw eene prijsvraag uitge-schreven, die echter evenmin een allen bevredigend ontwerp bracht,totdat eindelijk een door den Architect H. P. Berlage gemaakt ontwerpwerd goedgekeurd en uitgevoerd en het Damrak daartoe voor een grootgedeelte werd gedempt. Deze derde Beurs, gebouwd in 1898, beslaat een onregelmatig recht-hoekig grondvlak van + 6400 M2. en is niet alleen geheel overdekt,maar wordt des winters ook geheel verwarmd. In plaats dus van op eene open brug over het Damrak en bij slechtweder onder de luifels van enkele winkelhuizen beurs te mogen houden,
