Plate 18 from the first set of Thomas Daniell's 'Oriental Scenery.' The Taj Mahal was built between 1632 and 1643 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a Mausoleum for his favourite wife, Mumtaz-i-Mahal, who had died in 1629. The magnificent portal is a red sandstone structure with an imposing central portico. The marble inlaid is inscribed with passages from the Quran, and 26 marble chhatris or pavilions crown the whole gateway.
