Summary[edit]
DescriptionOpen-pit Cppper Mine - Mission Complex (17014648632).jpg |
Pima County Arizona - The mine is 2.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide and 1,200 feet deep located on 20,000 acres, benches are 40 feet high. Copper mining wastes constitute the largest quantity of metal mining and processing wastes in the United States, The copper industry is primarily located in the arid west, with Arizona accounting for nearly 61% of the domestic copper production. Background soil radiation levels in Arizona are highly variable due to the widespread occurrence of uranium-rich rocks. This results in a broad range of radiation levels in copper mine wastes. The waste rock piles are called Tailings and may appear to the casual observer to look like hills. In Pima County there are miles upon mile of Tailings. |
