ward the old bridge known as the StoneBridge, which crosses the Rimac. This venerablebridge of Chorrillos granite, which has the solidhandsome lines of an old Roman structure, wasbuilt by order of one of the Spanish viceroys in1608, and stands to-day, in spite of the attacksof earthquake and flood, offering the same quaintarched path to the wayfarer that it did a hundredor two hundred years ago. IMPRESSIONS OF A BULL-FIGHT 145 through little doors on the outside. Those whooccupy places above climb to an outside circularbalcony, from which the doors lead in. On theground floor there is a circle of curious lowboxes which give the inmates barely room tostand. We mounted to the more fashion-able upper tier of boxes, little compartments upunder the roof, where there was a circle of well-dressed folk in French costume. Look about with me! In the large circle belowus are the people, a great crowd, largely men, with the Panama hat much in evidence, and occa-sionally the head of a woman, swathed in theblack manto of the country, a somber nun-likehead-dress, with here and there the uniform
