re there were hints that home lay atthe other end of the steamship line. We stoodon the deck of the Alliance as she was ready tosail, and our heels fairly stuck to the boards whenwe learned that she would be in New York insix days. But we had chosen the long- way roundby San Francisco. If you are ever in Panama atthe end of a long journey, think twice before youdecide on the long way home. ACROSS THE ISTHMUS 181 were only gone from the ship two days, but helooked like a small boy who had been makingmud pies, and I took my turn at teasing. Itreally did embarrass him, for he hates dirt andfelt very uncomfortable in such a soiled suit ofclothes. I told him that the sight of him likethat was a great disenchantment. Hooray! Were off for San Francisco to-day,and youll get no further news from your chickstill we reach that port. After all is said and done, the best part of ajourney is the coming home. Home to our na-tive land; home to our own state; home to ourown city; home to our own books and picturesand dear familiar corners; home to those wholove us and forgive us! How I wish that thePalena could just now take wings like the swift-flying sea-gulls in the air about us—be trans-formed by some magic into an air-ship thatwould float us toward home quickly and quietly.Who knows but our next long journey may bemade in such an air-ship! Good-by, till you seeus. Hooray! Hooray!
