riend, said theCaptain. You are a Southerner. Why, so is General Thomas. Ill bet you ten dollars that the document is inyour valise there, declared the detective. Done! said the Captain, reaching out andplacing a gold piece on the table. Mr. Barnumdid likewise, whereupon Flournoy kicked the valisetoward him and pocketed the money. But thedetective refused to search the valise. Perhaps hefeared some trick. The frankness of his oppo-nent was calculated to baffle him. I was mistaken, he said, and then hesi-tated. At that moment the door opened and McCarthystuck his head in. His face was convulsed withlaughter. Excuse me, sir, he said, but Ithought maybe youd like to see a funny sight. Two Government detectives have cornered a chapin 328, and theyre making him unload papersenough to line the hotel pantry. If you want tosee em, sir, step right this way. He came into the room, unlocked the connectingdoor, and pointed with his hand. Two roomsaway angry voices could be heard in altercation. 14

TUsee you dead and die myself first. You havetreated me like a dog. What is it all about ? asked Mr. Barnum, advancing into the room. The door behind himclosed, and the three men lowered their weapons. The man who had been at bay in the cornerlounged up to the detective with a grin, saying,Well, Ill be switched, Colonel, if you aint adaisy from the county next adjoinin*. Come, sir ! cried the head waiter. His voicewas harsh and stern, and his attitude was thatof a commanding officer. ** Come, sir ! this is notime for buffoonery !
