Summary[edit]

Description

From the adjacent sign board:- “Dornier Do217E-4 code No U5+BD of Stab III/KG2, crewed by:- LeutnantK.PELLAR MajorK.KLOSTERMANN FeldwebelH.GOGGERLE UnteroffizierJ.UHL This aircraft was scheduled for a raid on Sunderland and was shot down into the sea 4 miles off Blyth on 24th February 1942 at 1950 hours after being intercepted by a Beaufighter of 141 sqn from RAF Acklington flown by F/O J.G.BENSON and Sgt L.BRANDON. The Dornier crew were never found.

Sgt Brandon was an actor in peace time and had been understudy for Robert Donat in several films. He was later to become an author writing two excellent autobiographies about his RAF service, one of which “Night Flyer” recounts this incident in detail.

This tyre was recovered from the sea on 19th February 1995 by the fishing boat “Wansbeck” from Blyth, skippered by Mr Dent who kindly presented it to this museum.” It is on display in the Bamburgh Castle Aviation Artefacts Museum, Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, UK.
