Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The feudal period in Japan dictated what one could wear, eat, do, and even the manner of one's final disposition, all according to social status. The gorin-to at the center of the photo belongs to a samurai family with each of the five shapes in the column signifying one of the elements believed to compose all living things: earth, water, fire, air, and spirit.
