vals.Around the park runs an agreeable drive nearlytwo miles long; and an inner drive, in the forni ofa circle, encloses the Botanic Gardens—which, it isstated, was the site reserved by Mr. Nash for theproposed palace of the Prince Regent—adjoiningwhich is the garden belonging to the ToxophiHteSociety. When the park was laid out, muchexpense was saved by the building of terracesround the enclosure, and by letting some part ofthe land to certain gentlemen who were willing tobuild villas for themselves within the grounds onlong leases. These, and the gardens of the RoyalBotanic Society and the Zoological Society, do notinjure the general effect, but rather add to thebeauty of the place. The full extent of this park,which is decidedly one of the finest in London,is nowhere seen, in consequence of the pubUcroad crossing it towards the south end, and theInner Circle being taken out of it. THE ORNAMENTAL WATERS. 265 Society cover a large portion on the north side.The ornamental water in this park is superior tothat of St. Jamess; and that part of the groundwhere it is situated is in all respects the mostinteresting. The water itself, says the authorof Weales London and its Vicinity Exhibited (1851), is of a good form, with its terminationswell covered, and several fine islands, which arewell clothed v.ith trees. It lies also in the midst growth, would have been of the greatest assist-ance. Passing along the western road from Port-land Place to the Inner Circle, there is a verypicturesque and pleasing nook of water on theright, where the value of a tangled mass of shrubsfor clothing the banks will be ver> conspicuouslyseen. Here are a number of aquatic birds, almostrivalling those aheady mentioned in St. JamessPark. They build and rear their young freely in
