Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Gurkha Soldier statue, with The Old War Office building in the background.

The nine-foot Gurkha statue was sculpted by Philip Jackson. It was commissioned by the Gurkha Brigade Association Trust and unveiled by the Queen in 1997 accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

The Old War Office was built in 1902 for the Imperial General Staff and was central to operations. The building was a focal point for military planning throughout the major conflicts of the 20th century, housing numerous Secretaries of State, including Sir Winston Churchill.
