| Description | Raleigh's Union Square, home to the historic State Capitol Building, is lined with many impressive edifices that House various government offices and church congregations. These two buildings are among the finest examples of architecture on the square. The Agriculture Building was constructed in the Classical Revival Style between 1921 and 1923, replacing the earlier Eagle Hotel building, a three-story brick federal-style building which had occupied the site since 1812 and which had later in its life become home to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The red brick building next door was constructed in 1888 to house the North Carolina Supreme Court and State Library, and originally had double-height floors, which were filled in upon the departure of the original tenants from the building and its conversion into state government offices. Today, these buildings help to define the street wall around the historic State Capitol, and lend a sense of grandeur and stateliness to the square. |
