Description
English: Built in 1852, this Greek Revival-style building was designed by Jacob Graves and built by James Darmon to serve as the Newberry County Courthouse, and was modified in 1880 under the direction of Osborne Wells, with the addition of the porticoes at the side entrances to the building, and a bas-relief on the front pediment. The building features a painted brick exterior with a gabled roof, an architrave with triglyphs at the base of the roof, six-over-six double-hung windows with stone lintels and sills, a two-story front portico with fluted doric columns, a second-story porch with a metal railing, a large front staircase, and a pediment with a bas-relief, one-story porticoes with doric columns and hipped roofs at the side entrances, brick pilasters a the corners of the building, a rear metal fire escape stair, and entrance doors with transoms. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and is a contributing structure in the Newberry Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and increased to its present size in 2004. The building presently houses the Newberry County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
