| Description |
English: Built in 1940, this Colonial Revival-style building features three wings with side gable roofs, gabled dormers, an oxeye window on the gable end facing Main Street, and a Palladian attic window on the gable facing Maple Avenue, a Palladian window on the second floor of the facade facing Main Street, an entrance with a pediment featuring dentils and pilasters on the facade facing Main Street, arched windows on the first floor, a small doric portico facing the large green in front of the adjacent Old Centre Hall, and brick chimneys. The building, one of several Colonial Revival-style buildings constructed around Old Centre right before World War II, was renovated in 1962 and 1997. The building has since been renamed as the generic “762 West Main”, with no new name to replace the controversial original naming of the building after Justice James McReynolds, a supporter of Centre College and native of Kentucky, after his bigoted racist and anti-semitic viewpoints came to light in 2017. The building presently lacks a distinctive name, and likely will be renamed at some point in the future. |
