Summary[edit]
DescriptionOld Herne and the tree-lined entry to St Martin's church - geograph.org.uk - 913768.jpg |
English: Old Herne and the tree-lined entry to St Martin's church The quaint old village of Herne with its 13th century church is just a mile and a half from the coast which often used to be breached by the sea. When the famous Protestant martyr, Bishop Nicholas Ridley, was vicar of St Martin's in the 16th century, Herne was an important part of the wealthy parish of Reculver TR2269, the most historic site in this part of Kent with evidence of more than a thousand years of settlement. Apart from the hamlet of Eddington TR1867, there was scarcely a dwelling, between Herne and the sea until the late 19th century. Then came the new town of Herne Bay. It has now grown so large that both Herne and Eddington, where Parsonage farmhouse once stood with its fields extending right down to the shore 915025, have become just suburbs of Herne Bay.
