Summary[edit]

Description
English: Beverley Grammar School was founded in 700AD, making it the oldest state school in England. It has not always been in the same place however. One of its former locations was in the southwest corner of Beverley Minster’s churchyard, as seen here in this illustration from around 1816. This stone building was in use from 1609-1816, but a school building had been on the site since medieval times. The only familiar sight from this view, looking west towards Keldgate, appears to be the roof of the building now occupied by the Minster Garth Guest House. The rest of the site is now dominated by trees and headstones.
