During our stay in the county we examined three of thelargest and most promising of the so-called rock shelters locatedin Lick, Liberty and Jackson townships. The examinations weremade to determine, if possible, whether the shelters were occupiedfor any great length of time as a domicile by prehistoric man orwere used only as a temporary and convenient stopping place forroving bands in search of food. These shelters are merelyrecesses cut into the soft conglomerate rock by the action of thewater in the bed of the stream, and in the course of time, as thebed of the stream would change by becoming deeper or by theshifting of the current to the opposite side, where perhaps another

This condition we find in many ofthe rocky gorges, with a series of large and small recesses, someof which would be available for mans use. At present aboutthirty-one of these recesses, both large and small, have been foundto contain traces of human habitation. Mr. Bingman, in his article Archaeology of Jackson County,5gives a detailed account of the shelters, and we quote at somelength from his article: The western half of Jackson county is underlaid with aheavy conglomerate, which is cut through in many places by thestreams, presenting bold and precipitous cliffs. Many smallcaverns, admirably adapted for shelters, and overhanging rOcksoccur in and beneath these cliffs and were made use of here aselsewhere. These shelter caves in Jackson county are all smalland low, and none of them bear any marks of having beenenlarged artificially or altered
