Summary[edit]

Description

The Ogle County Courthouse in Oregon, IL (1891). Oregon became the county seat in 1837. The first courthouse was built in 1841 but was never used. A group of bandits known as the Banditti of the Prairie burned the building down the night before the court was to first convene. The plan was to use the fire as a diversion as six Banditti members escaped, but the jailbreak failed. The trial was reconvened at a new location. The jury at the new trial was infiltrated by a Banditti member who refused to convict the accused. However, after other jurors threatened to lynch the rogue juror, he acquiesed, and three of the accused were convicted. However, they escaped before they could be sentenced. The next month, a group of vigilantes known as "The Regulators" formed to address the problem of the bandits. The leader of the Regulators was killed that June, but the group was able to follow the hoofprints of the bandits to their secret lair. 111 of the 120 members of the Regulators formed the jury for the trial of the Banditti. The leaders of the Banditti were executed by firing squad immediately after the guilty verdict. Although the Banditti did continue to harass the rural counties of Illinois, they stayed out of Ogle County.

After the trial, court convened in private residences. However, without a county courthouse, residents from other Ogle County communities petitioned for the county seat to be moved. A replacement building was finally built in 1848, but it was small and could only serve the county's needs for a few decades. The current courthouse was built in 1891 and has been in use ever since (although court activites moved across the street in 2005). It was designed by George O. Garnsey, who also designed the Ellwood House in DeKalb. Two Civil War cannons are found near the eastern entrance to the courthouse.
