Description

"Ryu sho ten" or "Ryu shoten" (Dragon rising to the heavens), also known as "Gekko Zuihitsu" (Gekko's Sketch), a Ukiyo-e print from Ogata Gekko's Views of Mt. Fuji. A dragon rises out of the lake near Mt. Fuji, ascending towards the sky.

The text on the left hand side is in an archaic form of Japanese writing that includes characters not in common use any more. A partial translation, with the still-unknown symbols marked with *****s, follows:

Printed on Nov 1st, 30 of Meiji [1897], published on April 5th by *****yoshi Matsumoto, who lives 2** Yoshikawa town, Nihonbashi ward, ****

Description British
Image restorationist, composer, amateur photographer and artist, and Wikipedian
As Adam lives in Britain, which makes it incredibly easy to acquire copyright in his works, he grants, if needed, an irrevokable license to use this work however you see fit. He requests attribution where possible, and realises that "where possible" means that that request is not legally enforcable. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:44, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Other versions
This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: levels adjustment, dirt removal, etc, some fixing of tears around the edge of the image, though not extensive - I felt that a few signs of age work well in something like this..
